Red Sorrell on the Road Home
is this a memoire or a self-help book?
The sense of “home” is not what it seems.
Using “Home” as a metaphor, this memoire unravels the confusion that drove me away from contemporary life as a teen. The story begins with living an ideal life sign painting in Jackson Michigan, living with my first true love. The story unfolds with an opportunity to understudy a dressage training great with a horse that was gifted to me. Referring to the skill set acquired on the circus, I begin to train my horse to do an act and plan a return to the limelight.
When the situation turns upside-down, I refer to my background with the circus and launch myself back into the creative, itinerant life of travel and adventure.
While preparing to return to performing with the circus, happenstance reveals a creative niche I am uniquely qualified to fill that requires travel all over the country. During this process, the popular concept of home is validated through invitations to come to the homes of my clients during this itinerant adventure. Each stop along the road brings lessons that enhance the forging of new relationships, and understanding self-worth.
As the journey unfolds, the narrative reveals the deep bond that occurs between a man and his horse, with horsemanship emerging as a metaphor for the humility, resilience, and opening up to life’s spiritual lessons. In the process, the narrator's concept of home matures, moving from fleeting campsites and carnival grounds to finding a lasting place to call home.
When serendipity provides an opportunity to have a home of my own, the connection discovered on the road of life, the bond with my horse and the social connections of my clientele gave me an upgrade to the concept of home that most people enjoy. But armed with what he learned along the road of life, the surprise comes when the sense of home is not linked to a physical place.
Ultimately, it’s a story of evolving passions, shared moments of joy and hardship, the rare connection one can find by fully embracing life’s journey and being the a conduit for an evolving sense of a healthy self while remaining in the moment.
